Our Mission
The Canadian Heritage of Quebec (CHQ) is a national non-profit, non-government organization dedicated to the conservation of heritage buildings and sites of historical or natural interest in Quebec.
1956 & 1960: Two key milestones of our history
The roots of The Canadian Heritage of Quebec date back to 1956, when the organization acquired the Hurtubise House which is now a classified heritage property.
CHQ was formally established in 1960. Since its creation, the organization has acquired, preserved and restored more than 30 buildings and sites, some of which have been transferred back to the local community.
The organization also has a large collection of objects and artifacts of all kinds and sizes, which have cultural, artistic or heritage value.
Our Vision
Compared to our long Canadian history, the six decades of CHQ’s existence is very short. It is however long, even too long for a neglected heritage home, or for an old church or an old barn that could succumb to the ravages of time if they are not maintained.
In fifty years, we can easily forget many things: our past, our history, our culture and our heritage. Too often we forget that the heritage that surrounds us today is the result of a long-term vision and extensive work.
It is thanks to CHQ’s founders, those visionaries who were able to see the priceless value of these unique buildings and sites, that we can now admire the richness of our heritage and celebrate their vision: to ensure the preservation and protection of these beautiful places, for the benefit of present and future generations.

Our Board
CHQ is governed by a Board of Directors which is made up of volunteers. It finances its operations through the annual income it generates and also through donations from friends, public and foundations, and others interested in the conservation of heritage properties.
The organization also receives support from governmental institutions for some of its conservation or development projects.
